About Saqi Dosaj
Saqi Dosaj is a poet, songwriter, and mystic.
Born on October 2nd of 1976, Saqi grew up near Michigan State University. She
was born to liberal Persian parents, who named her after the Saqi- a Persian
archetype of the poets' muse, often depicted in eastern paintings as the maiden
who pours a wine of inspiration.
Amidst the 1979 Iranian revolution that overthrew the Shah, Saqi's father took a
trip back to his native country. A writer and sociology professor at Purdue
University, he aimed to capture the spirit of the times, wanting to witness
first-hand the new democracy that was expected to replace the monarch's regime.
After spending months apart, four year old Saqi and her mother paid him an ill-
timed visit, just as the country became swept up in a fervor of fundamentalism
that ultimately claimed the revolution. Saqi's family suddenly found themselves
trapped behind closed borders before they could return to America; the Iran and
Iraq war had begun, to the shock of many. In 1986, after nearly six years of
living through the war and enduring life in fundamentalist Iran, Saqi was able to
return to the place she calls home. Saqi then continued a musical journey that
had begun years earlier, rediscovering her roots through poetry and mysticism.
Saqi's debut CD We The People was released in 2003, a politically themed
collection of songs and poetry backed by an eclectic range of musical sounds.
